I not only have an extensive background in commercial presentations through my work as an advertising copywriter and creative director, but also stood on two occasions as a parliamentary candidate, which provided me with plenty of opportunity to develop my skills in more formal public speaking. I’ve built on this experience to produce training courses that focus on the practical preparation and planning that any good presentation requires.
Courses for student groups
In a report published in February 2006, Oxford University and the UK’s Universities and Colleges Admission Service revealed widespread concern among academics about the presentation skills of students. It’s a view shared by many employers across all sectors, who prize communication skills highly. I’ve worked with both the University of Westminster and the University of the Arts London to deliver one-day courses for postgraduates studying in the fields of PR, publishing, journalism, marketing and design. The sessions involve practical exercises that give the students an opportunity to stand up in front of an audience. The course is supported by tips and guidance published online at www.planyourpresentation.co.uk
If you’re a director of studies, module leader or administrator at a university and are interested in developing a tailored training session for your own students, please contact me by e-mail at presentations@philwoodford.com
